The Brazilian Society of Oils and Fats (SBOG) was founded on September 20, 1993, in Campinas, SP, as a result of the work of its first President, Professor Daniel Barrera-Arellano, a researcher at UNICAMP. Professor Daniel put into practice the project of uniting professionals in the field of oils and fats in Brazil and collaborated throughout these twenty years in the consolidation of SBOG, together with the members of each Board and Working Groups. At the end of his first term, he bid farewell to the Presidency of the Society with the words: “[...] Only one principle governed our actions: the unwavering will to contribute to the creation of a prestigious society that will be respected for its honest and selfless work in favor of our field of activity...”

In its early years, the German Standard Methodology was translated into Portuguese by SBOG and widely disseminated in academic and industrial circles. To further promote its work, SBOG participated in events such as Food Ingredients, Fispal, and CBCTA Congresses. It also attended meetings related to updating quality standards for oils and fats with ANVISA – the Brazilian National Health Surveillance Agency – and MAPA – the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply. Over the years, SBOG has acquired numerous books on oils and fats, and its library currently contains more than 100 volumes.

On numerous occasions, the Working Groups have met at the facilities of the Adolfo Lutz Institute - SP, Fulmont - SP, ITAL, and the Oils and Fats Laboratory at FEA-UNICAMP, Campinas - SP, to discuss relevant topics for SBOG. Since its foundation, SBOG has promoted events with the aim of facilitating the exchange of technical and scientific information and fostering continuing education. The events organized present the most recent technologies and research in the field of oils and fats, in scientific and technical conferences; workshops and exhibitions of products and services. The events represent an excellent opportunity for the productive sector and the scientific community to learn about trends and innovations in the sector, and also stimulate the exchange of information and interaction between different industrial sectors and academia. Our events have a massive participation of researchers, technicians, and industrialists from the sector.

Over the years, partnerships with other important institutions in the field of oils and fats have also been nurtured. In partnership with ASAGA – Asociación Argentina de Grasas y Aceites –, SBOG distributed the magazine Aceites y Grasas quarterly to its members. A partnership between SBOG, the Latin American section of AOCS (American Oil Chemist’s Society), and the Blucher publishing house made possible the launch of the books "Temas Selectos en Aceites y Grasas: Volumen 1: Procesamiento" (2009) and, in 2012, "Volumen 2: Química". The series (edited by professors Jane Mara Block and Daniel Barrera-Arellano, with the collaboration of dozens of technicians and researchers in the field) was launched in Spanish with the aim of making this important material available to the entire Latin American market. The same partnership between SBOG and the Latin American section of AOCS led to the launch of the Master's level Business Research Program. A scholarship was granted to researcher Julio Cesar Rocha from the Oils and Fats Laboratory at UNICAMP for a period of 24 months, with the project coordinated by Prof. Dr. Daniel Barrera-Arellano. Together with ASAGA and Corchiga – Corporación Chilena de Aceites y Grasas – SBOG has an active participation in the Latin American section of AOCS.

Throughout its more than 30-year history, SBOG has followed the principles established by its founding members, providing environments for debate and the exchange of knowledge in the field of oils and fats in Brazil.
